Aussie Beef Cooking Challenge!

Aussie Beef Cooking Challenge!

We started a day with the beautiful clear blue sky – we love great weather in Perth. Today we are going to try Aussie Beef Cooking class at Fraser’s restaurant at Kings Park.

We meet Chef Scott and Chef Taka – “Taka san, are you Japanese?” Yes, Taka san is from Japan, but he said “since you are here to study English, I am going to do this class in English!” Students looked a little disappointed.

We all wore a big apron and made “Aussie Dinosaur beef pie”, “Magic Wand beef skewer”, and “Tim Tam Mousse”. It was very delicious to cook something we made ourselves – big success, our future chefs from Iitate!

Visit to Blackwood Valley Beef

Blackwood Valley Beef is about 3 hours away from Albany – Warren and Lori operates organic cattle farming here. Students got on the back of Warren’s truck, and we drove to the beautiful green hills where 500 cattle happily graze healthy delicious pasture!
Warren’s cattle are mainly Black Angus, and he is well known for his fantastic pasture management and high quality cattle production.

Different expressions from students – some asked questions, quietly watched cattle in the green field, played with Warren’s dog, or just laughing happily… but all seemed to have enjoyed the natural green environment of the farm.
After the farm tour, we enjoyed Warren and Lori’s hand-made beef burger under the blue sky – it was super delicious!

Good bye to host family and friends – we keep in touch!

Good bye to host family and friends – we keep in touch!

Iitate students arrived GSG in the early morning of 7 August. Many looked relieved after their first home stay in English, but they also looked a little sad as they have to say goodbye to new friends. We said thank you to host father/mother, host students, teachers from GSG, and promised that we stay in touch!

Amazing welcome ceremony at GSG

 Amazing welcome ceremony at GSG
We were interviewed by local newspaper, TV and radio – interest and support from Albany local community is truly amazing! The school assembly started with about 500 GSG students, with the school’s Scottish bag-pipe band leading the school headmaster and Iitate teachers.

After singing the Australian and Japanese anthems, Headmaster Mr Stuart Marquardt opened the welcoming ceremony, extending warm welcome to students and proposing the long lasting friendship between the City of Albany and Iitate-mura.

Following his speech, there were welcome speech by Albany students (thank you Tuscany and Sarah – your Japanese was fantastic!), presentation by Melanie about Japan after 311, speech by IItate student Hiroki Kanno (another great performance!), and speech by Mr Hirose on behalf of IItate-village.

GSG is well known for its great teaching principles including its focus on music, and we listened to amazingly beautiful “Still call Australia home” sung and played by GSG students….. this song, and the whole ceremony, was so heart-warming that many participants were almost teary in the end.

We would like to thank GSG, host families, and the City of Albany for this unforgettable invaluable experience. We value this special bond created between Iitate and Albany, and will ensure our relationship to continue for many many years to come.

Going to GSG with host family

Going to GSG with host family

Iitate students came to GSG with their host students/family – everyone is looking a little nervous, maybe they couldn’t communicate in English well last night? Even so, no one made an emergency call to Haga sensei, thanks to warm welcome by host families. After a short orientation session, each student attended classes with their host student, and some were welcomed as special guests to GSG’s Japanese language lessons! Lunch was prepared by host family, as Australian schools have no cooked meal lunch like in Japan.

We played cricket and beach volleyball for the first time!

We played cricket and beach volleyball for the first time!

After the whale watching, we met with host families at Albany indoor beach volley ball centre. Everyone was a bit nervous! But students became good friends after playing cricket and beach volleyball together. After the games everyone enjoyed Aussie Beef BBQ and great food prepared by host families – very “yummy”!!

Great Southern Grammar school - thank you!

Great Southern Grammar school held a special assembly today for 500 students to welcome the group from Fukushima.  The visitors from Japan were piped into the assembly hall behind a band and Australian students gave welcome remarks.  Kaname Hirose, representing Iitate Village, gave a presentation about their village and current situation, and Melanie Brock, representing MLA, Mate Rock, and Australia-Japan Foundation, gave a presentation on the disasters last year and the reasons for this trip.

The welcome from Great Southern Grammar - students and teachers - and from the host families in Albany could not have been warmer. Thank you!

Lovely Australian nature /

Today we spent a lot of time outdoors.  We visited The Gap and Natural Bridge near Albany. The waves were really big and quite scary. The beaches are very wide and very clean! We played in the ocean again and ate fish and chips.
We travelled in Great Southern Grammar's school bus and met students from the school! We have started to use English - we could ask names and ages!! The students are very friendly.
In the afternoon, we went on boat cruise. We saw whales, dolphins and seals. It was amazing!!

Rustler's Steak House, Albany /

We were delighted tonight to go to Rustler's Steak House, Albany. We had salads, delicious beef steak, and we even got to eat kangaroo steak. At the end of the meal, the lovely Dew Family took us for some ice-creams in The Venice. Chocolate was the most popular flavour, followed by lemon.

William's Wool Shed /

Learning about sheep
We stopped for lunch at William’s Wool Shed. What a great place!

First, we ate a massive sausage roll with tomato ketchup – very yummy! We ate ALL of it.

Then Laurence gave us a tour of his museum and we learned about sheep shearing. A good shearer can shear up to 200 sheep though a pretty bad one can only shear 80 in a day. Laurence owns 5,000 sheep, which is more than the population of our village. We learned that there are sheep you eat and sheep that you rear for wool. We also discovered that wool makes great underwear – absorbs sweat when hot or keeps you warm in the cold – and some wool products absorb sweaty smells.

Fact: At a peak, there were 180 million sheep in Australia. That was in 1969.
(Today there are far fewer, probably more like 120 million.)

We enjoyed the shops after the museum. Some of us bought giant lollipops and some of us enjoyed looking at sheep products … and some of us enjoyed a very funny monkey sound book!!
